An unfortunate turn of events. The LCMS has lost its way on so very many levels.

Another way to look at it - Finnern had 158 votes, Ball lost 112 votes, there were 196 additional voters on the third ballot. That adds up to 466 votes. Assuming Harrison and Biermann did not lose any votes, Harrison got 281 of those votes, 60.3%.

It should also be noted that the Convention Floor didn’t exactly split, as the balloting wasn’t done on the convention floor. A closer look/analysis would have to be done to compare where there is overlap between congregational District Convention lay delegates — who were charged with making the SP vote — and the electoral circuit lay delegates to Synod Convention, who will be making the VP votes.

There’s no doubt that Synod is split, but that can’t be assumed as automatically projecting to be exactly represented in the makeup of delegates in Phoenix. Likely, perhaps, but not a given.

At least no Biermann, the guy who quotes Forde favourably and suggests that sometimes pastors should give their congregations a "surprise" with some fun variation of the usual Sunday service

I do find it ironic that so many confessionals were worried about a Biermann presidency because of his stance on self-defense in the Large Catechism and eagerly supported Harrison, the same guy who approved the Large Catechism, and thereby Biermann's essay.

2026 Overture 5-40 resolved, because of serious problems with the book, to direct CPH to cease distribution of the ChiCom-manufactured LLCACA. But Floor Committee 5 dumped Overture 5-40 into an Omnibus Resolution A to be referred to the CTCR who, along with the Synod President and the seminary faculties, was the commission responsible for preparing, reviewing, and certifying the book in the first place!

The Synod President, who previously stated, “You have before you one of the greatest resources for Christian faith and living ever produced by The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod”, but later admitted LLCACA was “unclear” and “could have been worded better,” and then went on to say “there were numerous ones of those cases”, did not mention anything about Overture 5-40 in his instructions to the floor committee, which could be seen as a not-so-subtle hint to Floor Committee 5 about where to put Overture 5-40.

Recall that at the 2023 synod convention, Resolution 5-14, which endorsed and encouraged the use of LLCACA, was withdrawn from consideration because of the claimed "risk of bringing up a lot of painful stuff" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPOkziebVZ0#t=4619s). Such “stuff” would likely have included sharp criticisms about numerous assertions in the 5-14 WHEREASes and Resolveds.

I couldn't believe that Rev. Scott Adle called that withdrawing of the resolution a victory in his ACELC address. That refusal to talk about "painful stuff" can hardly be called a victory. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=whGHiu7PT1s&t=756s&pp=2AH0BZACAQ%3D%3D&ra=m

At the 2023 synod convention, there was a motion and second to bring back Resolution 5-14 to the floor for consideration. However the motion was defeated 416 (46.5%) Yes to 479 (53.5%) No (out of 1,023 voting delegates at the convention) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPOkziebVZ0#t=4899s).

Hello Andrew. There were some Harrison supporters that only became so when they saw Ball had no chance to win after the first ballot and didn't want Bierman, and especially when Ball encouraged his supporters to vote for Harrison after the second ballot. You may remember in 2023 Ball was also 3rd with about 7% of the vote. I believe Ball supporters who turned Harrison supporters were not supportive of Bierman primarily for his 2A stance, but more for reasons like you point out and for a more liberal application of Formula X coupled with Augustana XXIV. Love you brother.

The analysis has some significant blind spots. But everyone who voted for Lange or Ball expected eventually to vote for Harrison. I can’t say anything for sure about Finnern voters.

Ball’s endorsement of Harrison didn’t affect the outcome, though it may have prevented a fourth ballot.

Ball very much played a role. All the models we were running before that vote spent call indicated that Biermann would retain momentum and win, possibly as early as the third ballot.
