The Structure & Functions of a Typical Lutheran Church
Is everything packed into a typical modern LCMS parish sustainable or necessary?
Many congregations of the Lutheran Church―Missouri Synod (LCMS) are under growing organizational stress. They’re suffering from intertwined problems related to cash flow, under-funded reserves, deferred maintenance, inadequate insurance, aging buildings with tired and inefficient mechanical systems, and poor church management skills and resourcing. The demographic crisis drives nearly all of it.
Before you can address the shortcomings, your congregation needs to know what it has and what it doesn’t have, and then where to prioritize, invest, or cut back. Below are some ways to frame and think about your church’s structure and functions. Every church is unique, so the information provided is illustrative rather than exhaustive; however, it will cover approximately 80% of the Synod’s parishes.

There are WAY too many things going on here. This looks more like running a business!! Much of this is needed, but much of it is simply too much for a congregation that has less than 200 members….
