I'm glad they passed the resolution naming Charlie Kirk. However, I did note that your subhead in this article says the LCMS recognized Kirk as a martyr. Is that accurate? The article says people defending the resolution said it didn't call him a martyr. Just a little confused?
The one argument that bothered me was the political concern… strictly speaking, aren’t all martyrs victims of politics? It is the governing authority that put them to death, and standing against a governing authority involves a political stance. If we, as Christians, don’t stand against a government that supports abortion, sexual immorality, and the maiming of children, then what is the point of calling ourselves Christian. Yes, Kirk was very politically active, but it was clearly because of his faith that he was determined to make a stand.

This is an excellent resolution. It’s disheartening to laypeople when the church does not address the issues of our time, and I think we need to take courageous stands on these issues. Even naming Charlie Kirk without calling him a martyr is important (though I think we could call him a martyr). The devil wants us to be afraid to be “political” because it might threaten our nonprofit status or we might be called “Christian nationalists” or “Republicans” or something like that. But pastors need to boldly address the world we are living in from the pulpit. It’s not about being relevant, it’s about speaking the truth, it’s about leadership.
Interesting that the LCMS would declare someone a martyr to whom they would not give communion. Do all the delegates know about his Christian Nationalism. If they do - how sad.
