Creating a New Logo for the Rocky Mountain District - LCMS
Ad Crucem recently won a competition to design a new logo for the RMD.
Last August, the Rocky Mountain District (RMD) of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) announced a competition to design a new logo for the district. A straightforward design brief was provided, although achieving every goal would be a challenge:
Ad Crucem started with two basic concepts to establish the client’s design and aesthetic preferences.
1. Orientation: horizontal, portrait, square, or round.
2. Color: black and white, color, or both.
3. Symbolism: capture the design brief as fully as possible. A crucifix was always going to be central and dominant in the design.
4. Usage: 90% of most logo use is black and white using desktop printers. Other considerations include embroidered use and large-format signage of different types.
District President Maxwell responded with specific requests that allowed us to proceed to the next stage and produce a selection of variants of the preferred format. The variants offered different typeface treatments and differences in composition for some of the key design elements and symbolism.
Some additional variants were added to the mix for consideration. Version 5 plays up the beautiful mountain night sky free of light pollution and reflecting Psalm 19. Version 6 offered a simplified alternate version.
President Maxwell ultimately decided on a hybrid that combined elements from each variant for the final logo. Once approved, the final version was made print-ready and supplied to the Distict in several formats, including vector and raster versions.
The logo is now deployed for use by the RMD.
